Development of an efficient classification of bottom ash for utilizing metallic recyclable material
In Germany each year about 5 million tonnes of wet discharged ash from waste incineration processes are produced. The grain fraction smaller 10 mm has a share of about 40-60 wt.-% and still contains substantial amounts of recyclable material (e.g. nonferrous metals). However, sieving machines have great difficulties to screen the fine material smaller 10 mm due to the water content from the wet discharging process.
The aim of the joint research project is to optimally condition the partially unused fine fraction smaller 10 mm for subsequent sorting processes in order to mobilize recyclable materials. The metal potential would then increase up to 50 % compared to not treating the fraction 0-10 mm. By developing energy-efficient technologies and thus converting waste into valuables, waste management costs, environmental impacts and greenhouse gas emissions can be reduced.
As of august 2015, together with the project partners, the pbo Ingenieurgesellschaft mbH, the Wertstoffverwertung Wuppertal GmbH and Hein, Lehmann GmbH Krefeld the Department of Processing and Recycling are researching the development of environmentally compatible concepts for energy- and material-efficient mobilization and recovery of secondary raw materials from waste treatment residues.
