The Friedrich Wilhelm Foundation is a foundation under private law based in Aachen. It was founded on May 15, 1865. Its aim is to promote teaching and research at the RWTH Aachen University.

Since its inception, the Foundation has supported research and teaching at RWTH Aachen University as well as its students and scientists in the form of scholarships and compensations.

In addition, the Board of Trustees of the Friedrich Wilhelm Foundation has awarded the Friedrich Wilhelm Prize every year since 1986 for outstanding scientific achievements by students and scientists at RWTH Aachen University. For this purpose, an examination committee consisting of at least three professors is formed, which awards up to 2,000 euros each to the best diploma, master's or master's theses, the best dissertations and the best postdoctoral theses of the individual faculties.
