The aim of the present work was the development and characterization of organo-chemical coating systems on the established dental abutment materials Y-TZP and Ti6Al4V. The extracellular matrix proteins (ECM) fibronectin and laminin were immobilized on silanized surfaces using a bifunctional crosslinker (BS3). In addition, a biological functionalization model was investigated that included streptavidin with biotinylated fibronectin. Within this work, the question was explored whether enhanced adhesion of gingival cells can be induced by the covalent immobilization of the ECM proteins fibronectin and laminin on the dental abutment surfaces. In addition, the adhesion behavior of three different bacterial strains on the biofunctionalized surfaces was investigated. Cultivation studies of gingival fibroblasts and keratinocytes showed significantly increased adhesion, proliferation and migration activity on functionalized samples compared to native surfaces. Bacterial experiments revealed reduced colonization on both streptavidin and BS3 cross-linked fibronectin surfaces. Based on the results of this work, the penetration behavior of a defined biofilm in a three-dimensional gingival abutment model can be investigated in vitro at the interface between functionalized dental abutment material in order to contribute to the prevention of periimplant diseases.
